This is a large scale urban project. I’m putting my own money up for it. I feel like I’m sailing into the unknown with no compass, scaling a mountain whose summit I can’t see. I’ve learned so much. Still I’m not wishing for less challenges just more wisdom out here. To keep it 100, I never even knew what Garland was a week ago. Who knew it would be so damn expensive. It’d be nice if my ideas didn’t cost so much. It’d be nice if they came in accordance to grant deadlines and funding streams.
But they don’t.
Opportunity knocks on the door at 4am and you can’t say your out getting a hair cut. You gotta answer that door, pick up that phone, or run with that idea.
Ideas are fragile things, man, fragile like a flickering candle. And if you don’t move on the ideas right away then the flame dies. You’re never gonna recapture that enthusiasm. You gotta wake up at 4am and write that chapter or finish that verse when the idea hits.
Today marks the 5 year anniversary of the passing of Nelson Mandela. He once said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.”
#Mlklights is also about lighting what’s inside of us as people.
One good idea can change the world. I think it’s great to have big ideas that wake you up at 4am—ones that pull you toward your purpose. If you’re not waking up super early ready to take on the world with an idea then your dream is too small. I’m telling you, big ideas create a forcefield around you and keep you safe. The clearer you get on the idea the more it pulls you toward it and opens doors.
I feel like our city suffers from a lack of big ideas, not a lack of good policy. I always say that if you can make it in Chicago then you can make it anywhere in the world. That’s because we’re a resilient people. I’m persisting through financial and health struggles because I’m inspired. I’m gonna keep doing it cuz I feel like it’s the right thing to do.
A lady from Minnesota dm’d me today and says she’ll buy some garland for the poles because she read my last post about Home Depot being out of garland. Opportunity knocked, and I gotta meet her halfway in Wisconsin to pick it up. I think we’ll do the trees too.
If the lights inspire me. I hope they’ll inspire you too. Please. Donate. Something. Anything. You may not be able to come out with us, but you can always Be a Part of the Light. https://bit.ly/2DNbXoc
